What is math, that thou art mindful of it? And the fun of math, that thou shouldst care for it?

If you're wondering where all the math pages are, be sure to pay close attention. Math is often left off the list of unit-study topics, child-led skills and spontaneous learning. It is a subject largely disconnected from its concrete, hands-on nature. We assume it must be learned by rote, by paper and pencil. Yes.....but no.

Many homeschooling math programs are moving more or less back into the concrete aspects of mathematics. They use manipulatives and real-life application to teach math principles. While we do study math formally at our house, much of what we learn about math is based in the realm where math rules: The sciences.
